Ranji Trophy: Orissa register first win over Bihar

Orissa achieved a memorable success in cricket by beating Bihar for the first time in Ranji Trophy at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack today. The 51-run victory assumed added significance as Orissa was accomplished it after conceding first-innings lead in the three-day East Zone match. B K Sikdar emerged as the main architect of the victory, hitting a century in the second innings.

This was the 11th Ranji Trophy match between the two states and Bihar suffered the first defeat after winning seven and drawing three. The win was overall second in 34 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa since 1948. Orissa had registed their first Ranji Trophy win in December 1952, trouncing Assam by an innings and 139 runs at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.

Opting to bat after captain N N Swamy won the toss, Orissa made 169. Lalat Indu Parija was the top scorer with 43 runs. In reply, Bihar compiled 193 to take lead of 24 runs. Arun Patel was most successful bowler for Orissa, bagging five wickets for 78 runs.

In the second innings, Orissa rode on a sparking knock of 105 by Sikdar and 48 by Ashokananda Jena to muster 269. Chasing 246 for victory, Bihar folded up for 194 on the final day. Arun Patel and DS Murthy also played important roles in the Orissa win.

Patel claimed three wickets in the second innings to finish with a match haul of eight for 127. Murthy was most successful bowler in the second innings, capturing five wickets for 64 runs. Alakananda Jena made his first-class debut for Orissa in this match.
